Tax Bracket Calculator

See your marginal vs. effective tax rate under a progressive bracket table — fully editable, since real thresholds change every tax year.

The bracket percentages below reflect current federal rate structure, but the dollar thresholds are illustrative examples, not this year's real IRS numbers. Edit them with current figures from irs.gov before relying on any result.

How it works: income is taxed bracket by bracket — only the portion of income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your whole income at your top rate. Marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; effective rate is total tax ÷ total income.

Limitations: federal brackets change every tax year for inflation, vary by filing status, and this doesn't include state taxes, deductions, or credits. This is educational, not tax advice.

Historical context: marginal tax rates have varied significantly over time — top rates and bracket structures today look very different from a century ago. Past rates say nothing about what future rates will be, but the historical record below is worth a look before assuming today's brackets are permanent.
